The Science of Aging and Anti-Aging

By Aaron Tippetts

There is a science to aging, and anti-aging. As Baby Boomers are getting older, science is discovering more ways to help.

There has been much talk about the importance of antioxidants with regard to health and the reduction of oxidative stress in order to slow the aging process. Antioxidants have been used in an effort to reduce or prevent the oxidation that takes place within the cells of the body. However, several studies have recently found this may not be the case and the use of antioxidants has become controversial. Megadoses of certain vitamins providing antioxidants have been found to cause even more oxidation within the body. The overall effectiveness of antioxidants ingested in various forms is minimal and sometimes harmful.

Oxidation occurs when oxygen is combined with other elements. It’s important for cells to carry oxygen from the lungs to other tissues throughout the body. This form of oxidation is vital for cellular function. However, it also results in the production of electrically charged molecules called free radicals. Although these free radicals are important in some ways, such as helping to fight off infection, they can also cause harm. In fact, they’ve been linked to degenerative diseases, cancer, arthritis, and overall cell damage that causes aging.

Oxidative stress occurs when free radicals overpower the body’s naturally occurring antioxidant defenses. They damage cell membranes, enzymes, and even DNA. When the DNA is damaged, it can result in genetic cell mutations-and genetic mutations are believed to be the cause of cancer. Also, when cellular breakdown occurs, the cells become less effective. That, in turn, begins to inhibit normal function of the organs and the entire body. Hence, oxidative stress causes the body to age. Fortunately, scientists are learning ways to intervene and reduce aging.

It is now possible to induce the body’s production of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase. These naturally produced enzymes are able to destroy the free radicals, thereby reducing oxidative stress. Rather than working from the outside in like typical antioxidants ingested with food, these enzymes work at the cellular level to induce cells to produce the antioxidant enzymes necessary to neutralize all of the free radicals that typically attack healthy cells. As a result, these healthier cells increase the overall health of the body and have an anti-aging effect.
