The Seriousness of Sleep Apnea

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

by Mike Herman

Some of the people who snore are actually suffering from a condition knows as sleep apnea. A symptom of sleep apnea is snoring, and what is happening is the the snore actually stops breathing while they are asleep.

With sleep apnea the person stops breathing for 10 or more seconds five times, or more, every hour which can lead to there being low oxygen levels in the body which in turn leads to many more serious health conditions.

The three most likely people to suffer from sleep apnea are:

* Those who are overweight. * Those who smoke cigarettes. * Those who drink alcohol.

Regular snoring (the medical term is ‘primary snoring’), is often more of a problem for the spouse, significant other and family members or the snorer. However there are some possible serious effects that may develop where the snorer’s body is “struggling” to breath. This condition, a precursor to sleep apnea, is known as ‘Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) .

which is a precursor to sleep apnea which results in extreme sleepiness, with such dangerous side-effects as falling asleep at the wheel while driving an automobile.

Beyond snoring is the serious condition of sleep apnea. It occurs when the person snoring gets to the point where they actually stop breathing for ten or more seconds, possibly a hundred or more times each night.

Stopping breath and severly interuptting you sleep can cause daytime sleepiness, a big increase in automobile accidents, irritability, personality change, restless sleep, headaches, and shortness of breath.

Having sleep apnea can result in other health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease … and even death. With such potentially serious problems as these, you can see why is a serious problem and it is very important to catch and treat it before it get too serious.

Signs of Sleep Apnea are;

* Waking up tired

* Daytime sleepiness

* Poor memory

* Impaired concentration

* Headaches, particularly in the morning

* Impotence in men

* Frequent need for night time urination.

There are two types of sleep apnea “Obstructive Sleep Apnea” and “Central Sleep Apnea”, although neither is good, “Central” is even more serious.

Obstructive sleep apnea is thought to mainly affect men who are 40 and 60 old and it is said to occur when the nasal passages and the upper airways become obstructed during sleep. Ordinarily the obstruction is caused by the soft tissue of the throat (the pharynx) simply relaxing during sleep. This obstruction prevents breathing until the levels of oxygen in the blood fall to such a low level that the sufferer wakens and responds by taking a deep breath - accompanied by snorting, rasping and other noises associated with snoring.

Obstructive sleep apnea is generally caused by, or made worse by, being overweight.

Central Sleep Apnea occurs when the nerves that automatically regulate breathing do not work properly It is a neurological problem; no “mechanical” obstruction is involved, as is the case with Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

In both cases, and if left untreated, severe sleep apnea can eventually become life threatening.

If you snore and notice any of the above mentioned symptoms, talk with your primary doctor and have it checked out.

Acid reflux - Symptoms, Prevention and Treatment

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

by Keith George

Symptoms

Almost everyone has occasional heartburn. But if these symptoms occur two or more days a week for at least three months, you may have acid reflux. Acid reflux occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter, the valve separating the esophagus and stomach, does not close properly, allowing acid to back up into the esophagus.

Heartburn is in most cases harmless, even if you are not comfortable with it. It is common during pregnancy and is not dangerous.

Many also get a feeling of sickness, have a hollow feeling in the stomach and diffuse pain in the stomach or the chest combined with the heartburn. The acid reflux may cause you to cough during nighttime.

If the heartburn comes back often and you wake up with acid refluxes you should see this as a warning signal. You should watch your habits, for example what and how often you eat and drink.

Pregnancy and heartburn

It is common with heartburn during pregnancy, do not worry. Some day it´s more, other days less. The reason for heartburn during pregnancy is that the pregnancy hormones make the uterus softer and easier to stretch out. The stomach, the upper part of the stomach, and the bowels are effected in the same way.

Acidity of the stomach can then come up in esophagus and cause heartburn. When uterus grows it will also push on the stomach. If you have serious problems, talk to your midwife.

What can You do - Prevention Avoid bigger meals and much drinking late on the evening. Avoid strong, spicy food and also fat food. Quit smoking and be cautious with alcohol. Try to avoid stress. Eat on specific times and add something between meals. Check your coffee- and tee-drinking. Try to avoid heavy lifting and forward bending.

Medical examinations

If your doctor suspects that your problems are caused by a disease your doctor will do an endoscopy which can be performed in a hospital or the doctor´s office. The doctor will spray your throat to numb it and slide down a thin, flexible plastic tube, the endoscope. A tiny camera in the endoscope allows the doctor to see the surface of the esophagus and to search for abnormalities. With the endoscope one can also take a specimen.

Treatment

Some treatment is easy to say but perhaps not so easy to stick to. - raise the head of your bed by six inches to allow gravity to help keep the stomach’s contents in the stomach - eat meals at least three to four hours before lying down and avoid bedtime snacks - eat smaller meals - limit your consumption of fat foods, chocolate, peppermint, coffee, tea, colas, and alcohol and also, avoid tomatoes and citrus fruits or juices, which contribute additional acid that can irritate the esophagus - quit smoking - wear loose belts and clothing - try to find your own way to raise your pH. Milk is good for some but not proved to work for everyone.

Your doctor may recommend over-the-counter antacids, which you can buy without a prescription. The doctor can also prescribe medications that stop acid production or help the muscles that empty your stomach.

Surgery is also an option when medicine and lifestyle changes do not work. It may also be a reasonable alternative to a lifetime of drugs and discomfort.

An Introduction to Essential Oils

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

by Dustin Cannon

An essential oil is a liquid that is obtained through the distillation process. This liquid is extracted from different parts of a plant, i.e. its roots, its leaves, its stems, and its bark. Don’t let the name throw you; essential oils aren’t really oils at all, and they don’t leave you with an oily sensation either.

Because essential oils are extracted from plant material, they often contain the nutritional essence of the plants themselves. In concentrated form, these essential oils can impart incredible health benefits, if and when they are ingested into the body.

Some essential oils are combinations of several oils. These combined blends allow you to gain the benefits of each individual essential oil at a much lower price than if you bought the oils individually. Of course, if you like mixing your oils yourself, you should probably steer clear of these.

Essential Oils and Aromatherapy

You already know that essential oils contain a large amount of nutrients. But how can you take advantage of those same nutrients? You could probably swallow the extracts, but they might not go down so well. So what are the alternatives?

One alternative is to use the essential oil as a lotion. What you do is you dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil, such as apricot kernel oil or grape seed oil. You then apply the mixture as you would a lotion.

The other alternative is aromatherapy. By using the essential oils in an aromatherapy session, you will be able to enjoy the physical and psychological benefits that they offer. In an aromatherapy session, you inhale vapor produced from the oils. The aroma will enter your body, enter your lungs, and get absorbed into your bloodstream.

How Much Do Essential Oils Cost?

Depending on the rarity and function of the oil involved, the price may vary. Essential oils that are relatively common will be priced lower than those that are hard to find. Oils that are more difficult to extract will be more expensive as well.

Essential Oils and Your Safety

Although essential oils can be used to improve your health, in some ways they can worsen it as well. The best way to think of an essential oil is as a prescription drug. They’re that powerful. You should never use such drugs without knowing much about them - it’s the same with essential oils.

First, always read up on the oil that you are planning to use. Take careful notice of the physiological changes that it can induce. Take note of the potential side effects as well.

Second, never take essential oils internally. Keep in mind that these are extracts; in other words they are highly concentrated liquids. In most cases it is unsafe to drink them. Stick to the skin application and the aromatherapy.

Dry SKin Relief - What helps?

Friday, June 23rd, 2006

by Jerrick

Do you have very dry skin which develops bleeding cracks in winter? Have you have tried various remedies including alternative medicine but to no avail?

Here some other proven dry skin relief method that you will find useful in order to eradicate that dry skin problem.

You might add 1000 mg of MSM a day to your diet to improve the strength and flexibility of your skin. It is an organic sulfur supplement that is usually stocked with vitamins and herbal supplements. It also improves healing speed and seems to be erasing all my old scars (but this takes several months to a year).

Something else that is easy and might help would be to mix up a bit of salt solution to use after washing, to replace the salts your skin looses with washing. These salts attract moisture from the air and keep your skin moister.

You could also buy that oatmeal powder stuff which comes with the oat oil. You throw your oatmeal powder in the tub, throw in some oil, jump in, and you become like a giant bowl of oatmeal, except without the synthetic sugar additives. It doesn’t smell great but it actually helps with dry skin.

After ruling out a medical condition, the best thing I’ve ever found for dry, itchy, flaky skin is an Zenmed, Autopalm and Skin E dip, all-natural remedies that many people have found extemely useful to counteract dry skin problems. See our reviews at http://www.dry-skin-care-guide.com/product-reviews.html.html

How to Make Cellulite Remove itself From Your Skin

Sunday, June 18th, 2006

by Craig Weaver

Cellulite is a substance that a good many people fear even though they have little reason too. You should note that you can get rid of cellulite and you can even make cellulite remove itself from the inside of your skin layer. Now this is not an overnight event mind you but there is hope that it will happen with in a decent amount of time to say the least. There is no hard rule saying how long it will take for the cellulite to be gone from your body but if you use one of the many cellulite therapy options you have the opportunity to make sure that you can live without this problem if you are willing to dedicate yourself to it. This is something that will take a fair amount of dedication on your part but there is nothing that will be all that complicate once you get into it. The best cellulite therapy option is too be sure and get yourself a good cellulite cream and then take on some intense diet and exercise. This is the proven method for getting rid of cellulite and making sure that you are getting the appearance on your body that you want so much. Remember there is no cream or pill that is meant to work alone to make cellulite remove itself from your inner skin layer but when used in conjunction with exercise and diet they are highly effective. This has all been proven and a good many people are now living a life without the unsightly cellulite that they once had. You too can live like this as long as you do not let go of the goal that you set.

To make cellulite remove itself from your inner skin layer you must be persistent. Once you begin to see the results that you want you can not let up. This is the biggest mistake that you can make when you are trying to fight cellulite. If you stop with the exercises and diet once you get to where you want to be then you are doing nothing more than inviting the body to build it all back up again. Sure, you do not have to be on such an intense diet but you still should watch the intake of fat into your body.

Organic Makeup : The Latest Trend Toward “Going Natural”

Sunday, June 18th, 2006

by Danna Schneider

In the year of mineral makeups gaining huge popularity, and earthy types of themes for makeup, even with some of the top cosmetics companies adding natural products to their lines of makeup, now there is a new kid in town : Organic makeup and cosmetics.

Organic makeup and cosmetics are exactly what they sound like. These beauty products, like organic produce, foods and dairy products, are made completely free of anything “synthetic” or man made. They are made of environmentally friendly, pure earth-made ingredients, and a new and younger generation who is more environmentally and health conscious is just eating them up, so to speak.

One of the biggest makers and a prelude to the big organic cosmetics movement, is a company called Dr. Hauschka, which is a cosmetics and natural beauty product based in Germany, which sells only 100%, organically produced makeup and beauty products for women. Jennifer Aniston is reportedly a fan. Some of the organic ingredients commonly used in this new breed of cosmetics are organically grown pigmented fruits and veggie-derived, such as deeply stained berries and other highly pigmented, naturally occurring, and more importantly, organically grown plant life.

Other ingredients used as emulsifiers and consistency forming agents are items such as natural and organic oils, waxes, flower essences, mica, organic corn starch, minerals, clays and other bonding agents which work just as well, and arguably better than their man made counterparts.

With an increasing concern over health and a huge boost in “natural awareness” over the past few years, female consumers who make the cosmetics industry the multi billion dollar industry that it is today, are calling for more natural and healthy products, which also emphasize environmental awareness. A lot of bad press has also come to light that several ingredients commonly used in skin care products, cosmetics and makeup are known carcinogens that contain toxins as well as allergens that many people can react to who may not even know it.

Taking these man made irritants and allergens out and replacing them with healthy, wholesome and organically grown and minimally processed ingredients may also prove beneficial to the skin. Think about it. Your skin is probably better able to breath as well as given the benefit of not coming into contact with possible allergens which can only exacerbate skin conditions and irritate and redden the skin. Many organic cosmetic customers rave that the products “just agree” with their skin.

The prospective organic beauty products buyer must beware though. Some of these cosmetics that are labeled organic may not be the real deal. There are currently standards being put in place by Organic Groups who have consumers in mind and would like to formulate some sort of certification and labeling system for organic cosmetics, just as is currently in place for organic foods like produce and other consumable goods. Once this system is in place, this sector of the cosmetic and beauty market should take off like wildfire, and be the future of the beauty world, for a more health and environment conscious world.

Tips And Important Things About Equalizing Your Ears And Sinuses

Sunday, June 18th, 2006

by Youri Vlag

Atmospheric pressure
During our whole life we are under pressure. This pressure is caused by the weight of air pushing down on us and is called the atmospheric pressure. During descents in diving, the pressure on your body increases. This is because more water is pushing down on you, creating more and more water pressure on the body.

Air spaces
In our body are air spaces that you can equalize, either manually or automatically. The most obvious air space that equalizes automatically are the lungs, equalization occurs with every breath. An air space that doesn’t equalize automatically is the middle ear. The middle ear is enclosed by the ear drum and the Eustachian tube. The ear drum is able to flex inward and outward, allowing for small pressure changes.

The Eustachian tube
The Eustachian tube is a tube that links the pharynx to the middle ear and is normally closed but can be opened to let a small amount of air through to equalize the middle ear.

When do you equalize?
Equalizing should be done before pain or discomfort occurs. During diving, equalizing should be performed every few feet during descend. If it is too painful to equalize, then prevent further increase of pressure and try again later. Never force to equalize, this can cause the round window to rupture.

Why exactly do you have to equalize?
From According to Boyle’s Law, as the pressure increases on descent, the volume of a gas in an enclosed space decreases proportionately. As the pressure decreases on ascent, the volume of the gas increases proportionately. If you need more info on this then I would suggest a search for Boyle’s law and equalizing.

Tips for equalizing during SCUBA diving

Before your descent, inflate your ears gently with one of the techniques described below to create a little extra air in the middle ear and sinuses.

Descending feet first will allow air to travel upward into the Eustachian tube and middle ear.

During descent, inflate gently every few feet. Equalize before discomfort or pain. Pain is a result of inadequate equalizing.

If the equalizing is not working, i.e. you don’t feel your ears pop, then ascend a few feet. This will decrease the pressure a bit. Try again whilst slowly descending. It helps to tilt the blocked ear upward.

Abort the dive or continue the dive at a shallower comfortable depth if you feel discomfort during descent. Never push your limit with equalizing as damage could result in permanent hear loss.

Contact your doctor about using decongestants and nasal sprays prior to diving to reduce swelling in the nasal and ear passages. You should take them a few hours before the dive and they should last from eight to twelve hours. Nasal sprayes should be taken thirty minutes before descent and usually last twelve hours. It is very important to contact your doctor about using these medicins.

Equalizing Techniques
Passive - requires no effort

Valsalva - increase nasopharynx pressure by holding nose and breathing against a closed glottis (throat)
Toynbee - swallowing with mouth and nose closed - good for ascent!

Frenzel - Valsalva while contracting throat muscles with a closed glottis

Lowry - Valsalva plus Toynbee - holding nose, gently trying to blow air out of nose while swallowing - easiest and best method!

Edmonds - jutting jaw forward plus Valsalva and/or Frenzel (good method)

Miscellaneous - swallowing, wiggling jaws - good for ascent!

A Cause of Diabetes? … Obesity

Thursday, June 8th, 2006

by Mike Herman

We all see the “daily” news reports that obesity related illnesses that are a growing killer in the world today. The death totals for obesity related diseases have increased by more than thirty percent in the last decade. Obesity contributes to heart disease, strokes, and diabetes and don’t forget they contribute to a whole host of ailments including arthritis.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the CDC) recently reported in a new study that self-reported diabetes has soared in the past six years. They also state that obesity is the main cause for this dramatic increase. Those groups more at risk are the older populations, poorly educated, and minorities. Minorities are predisposed than white Caucasians to develop diabetes. This first study was done on a regional basis; the new study involved the entire nation. The reports were alarming, and the CDC are concerned there will be even bigger problems in the future.

The Surgeon General states that the number of obese or overweight adults in this country is fifty percent more than it was just a decade ago. Children and young adults are increasingly being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, which is mainly known as adult-onset diabetes, and even high blood pressure is a problem with 24 percent of the population in children.

Also studies show that one third of the children born in the year 2000 will develop type 2 diabetes and this also leads to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney problems, and undermines the brains to work correctly.

Researchers have found that obesity also disrupts the metabolism of insulin in the body. They found that excess weight at the waistlines lead to increased risk for developing diabetes and even cancer.

An interesting fact states that those adults who ate fast food at least twice a week and gained ten pounds were more likely to develop diabetes. Fast foods are not considered part of a healthy eating pattern, even though some fast-food franchises have been introducing fruits, salads, and bottled water for healthier choices.

We now know that adult only needs to lose from five to seven percent of their body fat to reduce the risk for diabetes and heart disease. That means that a 200-pound person would only need to lose a little as ten pounds to see benefits.

A moderate change in lifestyle will not only help reduce the risk of developing diabetes but also will benefit your health in many other ways. Exercise also benefits circulation problems, heart problems, osteoporosis, and many other health concerns. Moderate walking, and mild stretching routines are a good way to begin a healthy exercise program. It’s important to talk to your doctor before starting any new exercise program. They will be able to guide you in starting out and give helpful ways to begin.

Studies have shown that increasing your exercise level, working up to 30 minutes a day, or having some form of moderate activity will bring good results. Even slowly walking, instead of the brisk walk recommended will give you many benefits.

Mild exercises for strength or yoga routines are good ways to begin an exercise program. Try parking your car farther out in the parking lot when you go shopping. This adds a few extra steps and if you do it consistently the steps will mount up.

You may want to try marching in place during television commercials.

Education is the key to preventing overweight and obese children and adults. Many of us do not understand the connection between calorie intakes, good and bad carbohydrates, and the ratio of proteins and fats in their diet. Simply understanding what happens to the food your body consumes will help us stay healthy. Seeing the results of obesity and obesity related diseases are a good way to help us decide to start living a healthier lifestyle. Regular exercise and healthy eating will go a long way towards lowering the risk of an obesity related disease such as diabetes.

As adults, we need to take the lead in our families towards controlling this epidemic of obesity related diseases. We have the ability to oversee what are children eat, look at labels before we buy a product at the store, and make healthy meals and snacks for our families.

Are skin care products the right choice for great skin?

Thursday, June 8th, 2006

by Isabella Rodrigues

It’s true that skin care products are essential to having good skin. Taking care of skin is important considering the destruction one goes through the aging process. With number of skin care products coming up in the market it is difficult to choose the right one. One needs to select a skin care product that would make a great impact on the skin.

How do skin care products work?

When you frown, smile squint or use any other common facial expression, your muscles contract under your skin. When you do it over and over again, the result can be wrinkles. Skin care products injected directly into the muscles works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles thereby reducing those persistent lines to form on your face. By regular application of skin care products you can actually find the wrinkles disappear.

Can an appropriate skin care product give the skin a natural look?

No skin cream can assure you an immediate natural look. It might take at least four to five weeks for your skin to react to the skin care product. The muscle activity that causes frown lines between the brows is simply reduced so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows.

The only problem with these skin care products is that they will provide results as long as you apply them. The moment you stop applying them your face will once again loose its luster and appear like it did before treatment.

Side effects resulted by a skin care product

The most common side effects include headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop ad nausea. These events are quite likely to occur within the first week incase the associates skin care cream doesn’t suit your skin.

Teeth Bleaching Facts

Tuesday, June 6th, 2006

by: Albreht Moy

Unlike whitening toothpastes, which only remove surface stains to reveal the underlying whiteness of teeth, bleaching agents actually make teeth whiter.

The most common teeth bleaching agents are hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide.

The effectiveness of teeth bleaching depends on the color of your teeth. Bleaching works best for yellow stains, while gray teeth, which can result from certain antibiotics, are much harder to whiten.People who have stains from smoking, red wine or coffee can get very good results with teeth whitening.

There are two different ways to get whiter teeth:dental (in-office) whitening, and using a home bleaching kit available through a dentist.

A dentist applies a whitening gel, containing a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide, to your teeth, which is then activated by a special blue high intensity light or laser, causing the gel to release the oxygen molecules. The laser merely activates the bleaching gel,it doesn’t actually penetrate the teeth.

The results depend on the shade of your teeth before bleaching.

While in-office teeth bleaching is the safest route to go, home teeth bleaching can be also be safe, and effective,if done properly and under the supervision of a dentist.

Tray teeth whitening technique involves the use of a plastic tray that is filled with bleaching gel and then fitted over your teeth.By keeping the bleaching gel in contact with your teeth, for the prescribed period of time, your teeth will get whiter.Persons who are using the teeth bleaching products should always ask a dentist for advice.

Increased tooth sensitivity and gum irritation and are the most common side effects of teeth bleaching. Some people even experience extreme pain.Your dentist will advise you on the appropriate steps to take if your teeth become sensitive during the bleaching process.

Although the results of teeth whitening can vary from person to person, most people are very satisfied with their results. But if teeth bleaching isn’t working for you or if have teeth that are shaped badly or crooked, veneers may be the option.
